Daydreaming in Color

Red Cooker

When we bought our house over 10 years ago, I was completely clueless when it came to interior design.  The place was in desperate need of new paint and carpets, and I didn’t want to do anything too drastic.  I figured if I kept it neutral, I’d never have to worry about matching or clashing.  We ended up with swiss coffee (off white) walls throughout the house, carpeting in unobtrusive tan.  For a few years I was completely fine with this “safe” palette.  Then I started watching HGTV – maybe a little too much HGTV.  I realized that color is nothing to be afraid of.  I’ve been dreaming of repainting ever since.  The carpets?  I’d love to pull them all out and go with the hardwood or laminate flooring we should have sprung for in the first place.  My fear of color has left me with a house that is simply drab and I’ve been thinking a lot lately about how I can liven it up without spending a fortune.

One room that really could use a pop of color is my kitchen.  It’s perfectly functional as is, but with all the time I spend in there it would be fun to have something a little more inspired.  Maybe swap out my boring white stove for one of those snazzy red cookers (as my friend Alex would call them)?  That might perk me up on a rainy day like today.  Perhaps some new knobs for the cabinets, some colorful curtains…I don’t suppose KitchenAid wants to let me trade my silver stand mixer, which I adore, for one in candy apple red or one of their other amazing colors?

What is your take on home decor?  Do you play it safe with neutrals or go wild with color?
