Getting Friendly with Food

I was a single gal for a good while, but when I got married suddenly I was cooking actual meals – not a single-serve portion of pasta or perhaps a simple plate of rice and beans. No, I broke out my slow cooker, dusted off my pots and pans and started downloading real recipes off the Internet. I found out I like to cook when I’m relaxed and have the time. Chopping veggies, carving meat and seasoning sauces is actually fun. Along with cooking came something I didn’t really plan on – finding a way to store and preserve all the food I was buying.

Food storage became something I was interested in. All of the sudden I had a new appreciation for plastic containers of all types (especially ones that came with the lunchmeat we buy) and my husband got me a vacuum sealer for Christmas. No, I didn’t throw it back at him – I really wanted it!  We began to purchase our meats and other foods at bulk stores so we could portion it out and use it at our convenience, and save money at the same time. Now that we had this fabulous vacuum sealer that would preserve our purchases for long periods of time, there was one thing still missing. A freezer.

One day out of the blue my previous employer called and said he was moving, and would I like his little chest freezer? Well, yes, I said! That evening our little freezer became a part of the family. It isn’t just a method of  long term food storage – it holds pounds and pounds of chops, roasts, chicken breasts, and ground beef (along with a few containers of ice cream) quietly and coldly, until we have a need to dip into our stash. He’s become our little frozen friend, like a chilly little droid waiting to serve us.

Now that we have our son I’m in the kitchen more but not creating as elaborate meals as I used to. However, I still enjoy putting together a good tasting meal and I hope to teach my son how to put together a decent dinner so he can impress his girlfriend one day.
